NJAXSIIN AND SALT

Njaxsiin

Here we go! We will soon be hosting Taina Laaksonen, a designer from Finland, at Waaw. Following Taina's orders for preparing her residency, we have now obtained the first fish skin from Guet Ndar and soaked it in salt so that when she arrives, there will be skins that can already be further processed and transformed into some lovely objects! Our plan is to document this process also in the form of an exhibition at Galérie Ethiopiques, where during the month of November you can actually see the transformation in action, with insights into how to work with fish skin. Are there local actors who still work on fish skin and use the material for other purposes than for instance glue? Which fish skins are strong, and which not? Did you know, for instance, that shark skin is five times as durable as cow skins? Of course we will not be working on any endangered species but only with the fish that is sold in the local markets for food. Such as the one in the picture that the local population calls njaxsiin, also known as dorade.
